Development towards final

brainstorm

When we as a group see and visualize a building, Jiwon is attracted by the materiality of the architecture especially with glass whereas Jisoo is attracted by the function of the architecture which might go well side by side with Salva's architectural language which is form incorporated with detail.

We selected the following elements: materiality, form and function as a character that we as individuals get attracted to or get inspired by when we look at an architectural structure. We enjoy observing and getting influenced by it with a utopian mind.

Our hotel will transform from one structure to another, ideally from utopia to dystopia by decaying and disturbing the overall rich quality that is depicted in the utopian world in a chaotic and destructive way.

We have researched materiality (glass), form and function which can be used as a foundation for the design of our utopian hotel.

-Focus on the aesthetic aspects from this research.
-Pick out the geometric elements and involve with the overall form and language of the hotel.
-rigid and straight, linear? or random shapes and polygons?

Detail
Detail in the form of patterns, can be used to grasp our attention to architectural structures. Since we were already personalising our work, we though we could make it a representation of ourselves even more by incorporating our cultural background. Since Salva has a strong sense of her cultural background she thought it would be look cool if we used the patterns found on the walls of mosques as a texture or materital for certain parts of our hotel's facade. These patterns are very dense and complex so in a way they almost look like weavings. So we could photoshop these patterns and alpha channel them so that when put on a facade they could look really cool with light shinning through them.

Could be used as a weaving pattern on rhino.

- simple geometry or polygons?
-void or solid?
-the colour and materiality influences the overall atmosphere of the site. Consider materiality.
Form and detail is what really grasps our attention when it comes to bulidings and structures. So focusing on form, detail and materiality will help us convey our idea of utopia and dystopia much more clearly.

PROCESS AND EXPERIMENTS

we imported the above model on second life and it came out like so. Problem. How can we solve this?
tried to upload the meshes individually.
The curve has failed
The triangles seem to have come through but the graphics are failing. Some triangles are hollow in the inside and solid at the back.

When we uploaded the above meshes onto second life, it accepted the model as one whole object therefore avatars could not go into the spaces in between walls and closures. Therefore we simplified the shapes and volumes and create a very simplistic wall with large amount of individual polygons all stacked on top of each other like such:

The triangular mesh below are separated and exploded in rhino to give each triangles individuality.
is this channel effect happening because from the walls set in grasshopper? or is it simply due to graphical reasons?

we have to find another way of uploading our models.
we made this model but it did not impart any utopic character.

Therefore we started another design. The curve of the walls create elegance and calmness.
Like Jiwon's internal closure experiment, we decided to interweae the walls and the curves together.
However, the after look did not satisfy us. It rather looked disturbing.

from the utopian hotel above, the build will transit to a dystopia hotel which involves the characteristics of chaos and decay by scripting.
Below are just experiments and concepts of the overall structure or arrangement of the prims.

concept one
with curves

concept two
chaotic in arrangement but complex overall

All of the trials above failed us to present a decent graphic quality in second life. We are not sure why this is occuring but surfaces fail to stay visible in a distance. Therefore we came up with a whole new design with our initial experiments.

Using the singular mesh jiwon has experimented at the very beginning, we created a swirl of mesh which cuts through space with its complex and rigid pattern of the mesh.
