Hotel idea brainstorm

From the 123 3D Catch programme we have used, we screen printed different moments of the hairbrush and the cup and sketched on top of the images considering the importance of human experience and the concept of dystopia and utopia. Furthermore, the sketched ideas of the hotels focus on how the structure can benefit the arrival, departure and the storage areas.

The following sketches are categorized into three factors: land, water and space. We want humans to interact with their surroundings and gather their personal emotional response as much and far as possible which ultimately resonates whether a place is utopic or dystpic.

Land
Using the outline of the brush as a landscape, we briefly created a city of skyscrapers and an underground which links to a more smooth and soft landscape which reflects Waiheke Island.
Using each peak of the brush as an arrival/departure of the flying vehicle, the distorted hairbrush is converted into a massive hotel with the base of the brush underground.

The internal structure such as the floor levels, stairs, balconies and lifts are emphasised. The dented part of the cup functions as the entrance of the vehicles with two departures on the right hand side. The hot air balloons are stored on the very bottom floor and make its way up and down the hotel.

This section focuses on the undergroud floors and how everything is hidden inside and secretive. It reveals what is happening inside, all the different spaces and levels available. This has a strong connection to our idea of perception, how external images are not everything.

 Under water
With this particular photo, we were reminded of something underwater, almost an iceberg where most of the mass and structure is underwater. Similarly most of the body of this structure/hotel is underwater and it has an underwater entrance through which vehicles can enter. The hotel is also encased in some sort of a bubble

 Space
The two pieces of the hairbrush were separate from one another in the original image, almost floating in mid air, which made us think of space. And so we thought one of the concepts for the hotels could be based in space. The smaller structure at the bottom is the landing place for the vehicles, and there are vertical chutes through which the travelers can move up into the hotel. There are also tunnels or passageways that are attached to the hotel and lead to different sections or facilities in space.
Having the flat roof open, hot air balloons are allowed in and out the hotel and function like a taxi. The only way in is through the flying vehicles which is marked on the right bottom page. The key character of this hotel is that it is floating in air less than 5m which has the ability to explore both land and space (non-flying and flying vehicle).

After the brainstorm of ideas, we burned a plastic bottle and distorted and morphed the volume to explore the physicality of the coffee cup created in our 123 3D catch video. By doing so, we can examine the curvatures and the relationship between solid and void.
From the outside, the melted bottle look as if it has no function and life to it. However we discovered that the spatial elements inside the bottle is conveyed rather elegantly and smoothly. The unexpected discovery and the surprising reaction relates to our idea of perception and the sketches above; the external and the internal  impression don't always match.

Using the bottle as a guideline or an inspiration, we focused on individual arrival/departure/storage parts of the hotel and develop it digitally.

we focused on the dented moments of the bottle which represents the landing of the vehicles. Where the sphere and the mesh meet is hollowed out which creates a void within the solidified mesh which functions as an entrance for the vehicles into the hotel vehicle bay.
