Questions of Space

California College of the Arts, San Francisco

Is space a material thing in which all material things are to be located?
Space can be explored in both ways: material and immaterial. In other words, space could imply the material thing or the material things could imply the space. This relationship between the use of material and the space involved strikes huge impact on each other.

Is the perception of space common to everyone?
Not necessarily in a sense that everyone has different perceptions of space. One may say that given space curbs them and comforts them whereas the other might say it distracts them. For example, from the space exploration tunnel above, one might say the continuous swaying hexagons create beautiful sinuous curves altogether and therefore an optimistic space. Others may criticize and state that the space lacks openness.

Is there a language of space (a space-language)?
When we discuss the term 'language', we think of style and the architectonics of space rather than actual instances of diction which involve and embrace space and spatial elements. A space can be defined in many ways be it in abstract or logical sense. The term 'language' will relate to the characteristics and elements of the given space.

Is space the product of historical time?
Space can be defined in many ways and can be understood, inspired and influenced in many more. It can also change over time and over design process and therefore the boundaries within the spatial concept is limitless.
