Experiments

From the phrase stated in the overview, we, as a group picked out and highlighted important keywords that should be considered and be involved with our weaving and knitting texture. From the photographs and researches we explored, we created patterns and a set of textures that deal with the keywords highlighted above and the idea of knitting and weaving. The made textures below does not necessarily embrace the external image of our hotel or the facade/portion of the external surface but it is an abstract starting point of the atmosphere of our hotels.

The built fabric is the 'nature' of the city. It is what we recall when we leave.

Studio Focus Two Overview

SPECIALIST FOCUS  2 walls/collectors between 2 surfaces
SEMPER  weaving enclosure
DIGITAL PROCESS  image rhino/ grasshopper/ scratch
ANALOGUE PROCESS  weaving moment
DIGITAL MACHINERY  mesh import VW/ parametric scripts/ interactivity
PERFORMANCE TEST  post occupancy/ evaluation/ message/ received

The notion of interweaving, intercepting and interlocking ideas are strongly experimented in this focus. Surfaces that are composed by the weaving action of lines are added and subtraced from one and another are constantly in creating a sculptural wall. The functionality of a wall can stretch out beyond the very norm. The abstracted and moulded wall which creates an internal enclosure has the potential to interact with people around it and physically involve human figures to even climb on them. The human experience is again reminded and thought about.

"...Bright sunlight filled the streets, picking out the vivid colours of the wild flowers growing in profusion from the cracked sidewalks. Despite these embellishments, the city's character had begun to change...Abandoning his car, Halloway walked through the empty streets, littered with smoldering neon tubes as if a burnt out rainbow had collapsed across the sidewalks. Already he could see that everyone had gathered in the square, their backs turned to Buckmaster's memorial. They were looking up at the display sign on the newspaper building, the brief message which Olds had let for them repeating itself in a cry of fear, pride and determination..."

With the phrase above, we are to experiment with the action of weaving and knitting of surfaces, layers, lines, meshes and textures. From a range of digitalised weaved palettes, the flattened digital moments should be used as a foundational inspiration for the 3D developments. Using different digital processed programmes such as Rhino and 3d Max, a set of walls, paritions or screens should be created and be kinetically developed which can enhance human experience and embrace the human existence.

2 Sites to Travel Between

CITY

100 Beach Road, Auckland Central
Off-Centered on the Vector Arena is the modestly scaled cityscape. It is cut off from the city by the rail line and the cliff and roads that once were the coastal foreshore. Its cluster of side streets form a self-sufficient neighbourhood.

WAIHEKE
461 Seaview Road, Onetangi, Waiheke Island
This site is our bucolic landscape for a Garden City. The 'elegant but toy-like world of solar sails and flower filled gardens, the serene windmills and gently nodding reduction gear of the tidal-power machines' elements can be found in the site

Peer Review 1

Today we had crit with our given peer group Thien Pham and Vera Wang Yingfei. Both our groups explained to eachother on what our takes on the idea of utopia and dystopia was and further explained about the works we made along these lines.

The group conveyed their ideas of Utopia as a desired and idealistic life style. Though they did not say much, from their explanation we gathered that this idea of Utopia was something that was not actually realistic, in a sense that a Utopia is a setting of perfect harmony where every content within has meaning and purpose desired by the perceiver. From this we understood that their idea of Utopia, a flawless world was something that was only present in the conscience of one self.
When we asked about their take on Dystopia, the group said "opposite to Utopia". As true as this may be, this explanation did not give us to vision what their idea of Dystopia was until we were shown their sectional of their site.

Section

From this image, the group explained that this was their portrayal of their idea of Dystopia. They talked about this idea of urbanism depicted by neon lights and poisonous gases from technology being their dystopia where it is actually created by the communities within it and how they act that results in a sense of idealism or undesired setting. They also took on the heartbeat like shape that is portrayed on the right as a representation of the life of the city and how the straight line without any beats signifies the end of life of the city. Though after being shown their image of the section we vaguely got an idea of their mindset on dystopia, a better explanation would have been a lot better to extend our further understanding of their ideas.

For their two elevations of either sides of the road, they just had non edited photos on display. From our perspective these pictures did not explain anything in terms of Utopia or Dystopia or anything else in fact, other than where their site was. Even if having these non edited photos had a reason behind it, we did not know and were not able to find out as the group did not go on to explain this reason. From our shoes, it just looked like they were lacking in the amount of work that needed to be produced.

The group did have one stop motion animation of their plants but not three as requested by the tutors. The avatar and avatar moulds were not shown to us. They did have them but chose not to take it out of the plastic bag to show us.

Over all the crit was very vague in description of their idea on Utopia and Dystopia. Although the explanation of their Utopia allowed us to further imagine their idea ourselves, other explanations lacked very much on detail. The group also had insufficient work produced which could have allowed us to further understand their take on the topics we were given.

Group 43's review on us

Peer Review

This is the review of the works from Group 33. The main point of the works was to show how the group interpreted and presented their understanding of the story “The Ultimate City” as well as the meaning of what utopia and dystopia mean. They utilized both the collage and the animation to explore these ideas (although the latter was not required).
A number of attempts were made with the collage with each of them conveying the imagination and the mood of what the group interpreted of the “industrialized city” from the story. What most interesting was the collage in which the photos taken from the site visit were put together to create a panorama photo, divided the photo into 2 parts, differentiated by contrasting color and light: one half of the photo was black and white with darker tone, the other half was more saturated and lit with greenish light. At first view, the photo looked like a mere sunrise scene with similar layout and object, but the team explained that it was their use of light and tone on the photo that conveyed their interpretation of a utopian and dystopian city. To them, the perception of utopia was different between each individual and the meaning of dystopia was that it is “the repressive state under the guise of utopia”. The green light is explained as a reference to “The Matrix”, being the truth. The photo was therefore a representation of both utopian and dystopian city: the bright side represented the “true” ideal city while the dark part showed the false. This was a pretty good idea. An improvement could be made to make it better is to … the layout and objects in the photo in the two halves to make it more distinguishable between the utopia and dystopia.
With the animation: they showed a great variety of animation of their plants. One of the animations was used to explore the idea utopia and dystopia. They used the lighting once again on this animation to try to explore the meaning of utopia and dystopia the same way they did for the photo. The result was a nice animation but it remained an experiment as it did not contain any particular message.
Asides from the main objective, they had also completed the other activities such as: the researches about hotels, architectural evolutionary terms, as well as a fine summary of the story; and a complete set of avatars and moulds.
Overall, this group has achieved all the requirement of the first week very well. The works of this group showed that they had engaged in exploring ideas about the story of “The Ultimate City” as well as experimenting different ways of portraying their visions of what utopian and dystopian mean. The content of their work was clearly shown on the blog, which they had kept track of their progress with. The researches, the activities were all updated on the blog to show that they really sticked to their to-do list.

Transmaterial-1,2

CARD ONE
With modelling clay, we have picked up textures from our surrounding environment which can exemplify dystopia and utopia.

From the concrete columns around the studio, I have picked up instances of textures in an irregular order and without logical process of thoughts. The result depicts roughness and messiness which can possibly represent the idea of utopia.

From the patterns of our lockers, I have pressed the clay onto the walls of the lockers in order to pick up the regular patterns. The perfect pattern and its regularity reflects the optimistic imagination of utopia.

CARD TWO
Washi Parchment

Continuing the exploration of texture, we researched materials which could depict the above stamps materially.

washi parchment installed in high-rise building on Lexington Avenue in NYC.

different styles and compositions
Washi, handcrafted Japanese parchment is made from the elongated fibres of a variety of plants. The typical raw materials are kozo, mitsumata, gampi and hemp and Washi is made of the fibre of the bark. The fibres are stripped, cleaned, pounded and stretched. These art pieces can be applied for both for interior and exterior deigns and also fuse them with wood work, glass work and screen work. The mixture is spread thinly and evenly across bamboo screens, where it is then left to dry. The resulting paper is both durable and beautiful.

The cultural aspect of this material is more evident and strong on the non-coloured washi rather than the coloured ones on the bottom. The messy arrangement of the washi elements can be read as dytopic and the well arranged and regular patterned paper reflects the utopic elements like the stamps we have created in our  CARD ONE.

coloured washi is also available which is documented in the link below

Site animation

This stopped animation is created by taking series of photographs of our given site. The movement and the motion is strongly conveyed via the travelling truck and the followed on cars.

This animation vividly portrays the process of destruction and ruin from utopia to dystopia. The alteration happens in a very short amount of time. This conveys the idea of how a site can be quickly transformed and translated into either utopia and dystopia; dependent on the persons' state of mind, a site can be judged as beautiful or disgusting. Therefore we cannot say that a specific site triumphs another site's level of optimism or pessimism as everything is dependent on one's perception.

Process of left elevation

We have depicted a development from utopia to dystopia from left to right via the use of colours, complexity of lines, contrast of negative and postive space, the thickness of layer filters, the character of layers and the overall pattern.

Final left elevation - from the site stopped animation
(underlying idea of dystopia)

Process right elevation

A clear separation of utopia and dystopia via the thickness and build up of filters. The colour quality contrasting between the two boundaries emphasize the idea even further.

The final section depicts the idea that despite the filthy, dirty and congested exterior environment of the build, the community and the society within the building interior is what matters and finalises the overall character of the site.
